Marmelada
The starting point for this project was my obsession in doing my Grandmother’s Marmelada recipe - which is made with Quinces. A few years ago I even got my own Quince tree so I could do Marmelada in Ireland. This is a very popular jam in Portugal. A tradition in many families - to make as much as possible to last all year.
In November the batch of quinces was huge so I laid them all on my kitchen table and took a few photos. The photo was so inspiring that it deserved to be transformed into ceramic.
But instead of only laying out objects, I thought it would be more meaningful to make it as a recipe. And it was fundamental to have it written by my grandmother, who is becoming blind. So with the help of my mother she wrote it down on paper, my mother took a photo and sent it on to me, I printed it and transferred it to clay with wax free carbon paper. This is the central point of my piece.
Another special object was the fruit bowl which was made from a container that my grandmother gave me this christmas. I made a plaster mold of it. So each object has their own story and I find that beautiful and caring about this project.
Other elements are the quinces, I made as many as possible to fill in the empty spaces. The scale, colander, sugar bowl, pot (also inspired by my grandmother's pots) wooden spoon and knife. All elements are laid out to start cooking!
