The Magpie - After Monet
This was again a winter scene - this time with snow. Monets was painted in oil on canvas and is on a much grander scale of 89 x 130cm. The subject matter here is the Magpie contrasted against the white background and with his shadow and the ladder (perch) commanding much more of the painting than the small bird in a vast landscape receding behind him. I thought this might be more successfully executed in watercolour than oil or acrylic given the predominance of pale, languid and translucent colours
